What is a HEPA filter?

A High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter is any filter which is capable of removing 99.97% of particles that are the size of 0.3 of a micron. This standard was established by the U.S. Dept. of Energy, and later widely adopted as an international standard, the European EN1822. Under the EN1822, there are 8 different filter classes in order from least to most efficient. Classes E10 to E12 are Efficient Particulate Air (EPA) filters, H13 and H14 are HEPA filters, and U15 to U17 are Ultra Low Penetration Air (ULPA) filters1.

Around the home, you may recognize their use in air purifiers and vacuums. They are widely used industrial, medical, and manufacturing environments where dust and other potentially harmful and undesireable particulates are present. However, they come at a considerable cost compared to most conventional filters, and while offering numerous benefits over conventional filters, it is important to know when and where it is appropriate to use them over a conventional filter.

A High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter employs a complex network of densely packed fibers to capture particles designed to capture and trap tiny particles from the air. Where do I get HEPA filters?

Although HEPA filters are a more specialized type of filter, they’re usually available in many industry standard filter sizes. Big box stores, as well as your local hardware store may even carry them many common sizes.
